Irene Mutumba

Irene Josephine Mutumba is a Ugandan teacher by profession and a leading social and business entrepreneur. As an Ashoka Fellow (2005), Irene is challenging the traditional educational system in Uganda by creating a new learning environment where young people are encouraged to think and act like entrepreneurs. Through her youth-led and community-supported clubs, the Ugandan youth get the opportunities to be creative, demonstrate initiative, and approach learning in new ways.

Ms. Mutumba is the Founder and Country Director of the Private Education Development Network (PEDN), a non-profit organisation spearheading transforming in the Education sector in Uganda. She is also a Director in the PEDN Consults International and serves on many notable institutional Boards in Uganda. She is also a Non-Executive Director of the Guaranty Trust Bank Uganda.

During her early working life, she has held different executive roles with non-profits such as the Uganda Women Entrepreneurs Association, Private Sector Foundation Uganda (UWEAL) and Kilimo Trust Uganda, to include working relationships with Government Institutions such as National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) and others.
